CSEdWeek Spotlight Series: Stephen Michalik, WeTeach_CS Teacher
![]()
The WeTeach_CS program at the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) educates, empowers, and inspires K-12 educators and advocates to realize the vision of computer science (CS) for all.
Stephen Michalik is STEM Coordinator and the co-founder of All Nations Community School in Oak Ridge North, Texas, north of Houston.
We caught up with Michalik to hear about his experiences with WeTeach_CS, the program’s impact, and the importance of teaching CS in schools.
WeTeach_CS/TACC: What inspired you to teach computer science?

Stephen Michalik: Five years ago, we introduced robotics to our elementary students. A major component of the program involved teaching students to write basic code for autonomous function of their robots. I made it a goal to introduce every student in our school to CS within two years and teach them how to code robots. If we were to get students passionate about learning to code, I needed to get the necessary training to teach computer science.
WeTeach_CS/TACC: Do you have a main takeaway from your experiences with WeTeach_CS?
Stephen Michalik: I’m grateful for the great resources and professional development opportunities that are available to educators connected to WeTeach_CS. I’ve met many like-minded educators who are passionate about CS education and are willing to share best practices with others. Attending WeTeach_CS events leaves me encouraged and motivated to go back to the classroom and share what I learn with my students.
WeTeach_CS/TACC: What advice would you give a teacher new to teaching computer science/STEM?
Stephen Michalik: Be a risk-taker! As teachers often tell their students, “It’s okay to make mistakes because that’s how we learn.” We have to practice the same mindset when learning CS/STEM concepts. Students may learn the material faster than we expect, but know that they are there to learn alongside you. Finally, don’t be afraid to reach out to professional learning communities for support.
WeTeach_CS/TACC: Why should teachers consider WeTeach_CS as a program and philosophy?
Stephen Michalik: WeTeach_CS is a phenomenal organization to be a part of. The vast network of educators who are passionate about the success of their students is the foundation of this group. I have never come across a more committed, passionate, and devoted group of professionals who love what they do and seek to inspire others to do the same. There are so many great opportunities locally and nationally that teachers are invited to be part of, and we are also encouraged to represent our local CSTA chapter to serve as advocates in our communities. The WeTeach_CS staff is always willing to answer our questions, support us as CS educators, and encourage us to make an impact in the classroom.
WeTeach_CS/TACC: Thank you for your time and contributions to teaching CS and STEM, Mr. Michalik.
