The Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) has been recognized in the 22nd edition of the HPCwire Readers’ Choice Awards presented at the 2025 International Conference for High Performance Computing, Networking, Storage, and Analysis (SC25), in St. Louis, Missouri.

The list of winners was revealed at the SC25 HPCwire booth, as well as on the HPCwire website.

TACC was recognized with the following honor(s):

Readers’ Choice Award: Best Use of HPC in Financial Services

Cornell University leveraged National Science Foundation ACCESS allocations on TACC’s Stampede3 supercomputer to model how debt relief design and mortgage firm behavior shaped the U.S. foreclosure crisis. This produced insights that earned international recognition in regulatory economics.

Readers’ Choice Award: Best Use of HPC in Physical Sciences

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, UC San Diego/Scripps, and UT Austin built a real-time tsunami digital twin using the HPE Cray supercomputer El Capitan and TACC systems Frontera, Lonestar6, Stampede3, and Vista. The system turns ocean pressure sensor data and physics-based models into localized forecasts in under 0.2 seconds, which is about 10 billion times faster than traditional methods. This achievement cuts false alarms and speeds credible warnings.

“These awards highlight the power of advanced computing to drive real-world impact,” said Dan Stanzione, executive director of TACC and associate vice president for research at The University of Texas at Austin. “They underscore the exceptional work of our collaborators across academia, national laboratories, and industry. From modeling the dynamics of a national foreclosure crisis to enabling real-time tsunami forecasting, it’s inspiring to see TACC’s resources contributing to solutions with global significance.”

The annual HPCwire Readers’ and Editors’ Choice Awards are determined through a nomination and voting process with the global HPCwire community, as well as selections from the HPCwire editors.

“While the early advances in applying AI to science and engineering are producing exciting and impressive results, traditional HPC continues to drive breakthrough discoveries for mission-critical workloads and applications,” said Tom Tabor, CEO of TCI Media, publishers of HPCwire. “The 2025 Readers’ and Editors’ Choice Awards truly capture this dynamic era of innovation. Across the globe, grand challenge problems are being tackled, and often solved, thanks to HPC, now amplified and accelerated by AI.”
