District AI Guidance & Strategic Planning

As school systems across the country begin developing AI guidance, policies, and implementation plans, ALIGN has worked alongside district leaders, educators, and stakeholders to support strategic planning for AI literacy and responsible AI integration.

Through statewide working groups and collaborative planning sessions, participants explored topics including:

  • district AI governance,
  • instructional implementation,
  • professional learning,
  • student AI literacy,
  • data privacy and security,
  • ethical AI use,
  • and sustainable systems for ongoing evaluation and improvement.

This work resulted in the development of a practical district guidance document designed to help schools operationalize AI literacy in ways that are thoughtful, actionable, and adaptable to local contexts.

Developing AI Literacy Plans, Implementation Structures, and Responsible Use Guidance

This guide was developed by the ALIGN AI District Strategic Planning Committee to help district leaders create clear, practical, and mission-aligned guidance for the use of artificial intelligence in K–12 education. Rather than serving as a static policy document, this guidebook is intended to function as a living framework that will evolve alongside the technology while remaining grounded in the foundational work of schools.

At its core, this resource is designed to help districts do the following:

  • Establish clear expectations for AI use across classrooms and operations
  • Protect student privacy, safety, and academic integrity
  • Support educators in using AI to enhance, not replace, effective instruction
  • Ensure equitable access and consistent implementation across campuses
  • Build long-term capacity for AI literacy among students and staff
