Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming the modern workforce, reshaping industries ranging from healthcare and business to cybersecurity and education. As AI technologies continue to evolve, students must be equipped not only to use these tools, but also to understand how they work, where their limitations exist, and how to engage with them responsibly and safely.

The ALIGN Cyber+AI initiative was created to help educators and students build foundational knowledge at the intersection of artificial intelligence and cybersecurity. Through hands-on workshops, learning experiences, and emerging workforce pathways, participants explore both the opportunities and challenges associated with AI technologies.

Why Cyber + AI?

Today’s students are entering a world where AI-powered systems are increasingly embedded into everyday life and professional environments. Understanding AI is becoming an essential component of digital literacy, workforce readiness, and responsible citizenship.

Cyber+AI workshops help participants explore questions such as:

• What can AI do well — and where does it fail?
• How do AI systems make decisions?
• What are AI hallucinations and why do they happen?
• How can bias appear in AI systems?
• How do we identify misinformation or errors generated by AI?
• What ethical concerns exist around AI-generated content, copyright, and data sourcing?
• How is AI being used in cybersecurity, threat detection, and digital defense?
• What safeguards and “guardrails” should exist when using AI tools?

As AI concepts begin appearing across state standards and industry expectations, schools must prepare students and educators with both technical understanding and critical awareness.

Teachers play a critical role in helping students navigate an AI-partnered future. Cyber+AI workshops support educators in developing both practical classroom applications and foundational understanding of AI systems.

Educators learn how to:

• responsibly integrate AI into classroom instruction,
• use AI tools to support lesson planning and reduce preparation time,
• create engaging hands-on learning activities,
• write effective prompts,
• establish guardrails and safe use expectations,
• and help students critically evaluate AI-generated information.

Workshops also help educators better understand the “nuts and bolts” behind AI systems so they can move beyond simply using tools toward facilitating deeper student understanding.
